A winter retreat to Isla Mujeres, MX

Written by: Lizzy Atwood Wills

Isla Mujeres, translated as “Island of Women”, has a rich history dating back to ancient times when it was a sacred site for the Mayan Goddess Ixchel, the deity of fertility, medicine, and the moon.

The island was a significant pilgrimage destination for Mayan women seeking blessings for their families and fertility.

During the Spanish colonial era, Isla Mujeres served as a stopover for pirates, including notorious figures like Fermin Mundaca, who sought refuge on the island. In the mid-20th century, the island transformed from a fishing village to a tourist destination, drawing visitors with its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and natural beauty.

Isla Mujeres has become a popular tourist destination withs its stunning Caribbean beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a laid-back atmosphere. Visitors are attracted to its diverse marine life (whale sharks people!!), water activities, and historical sites. The island offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, and, doesn’t host cars, so you MUST drive a golf cart to get around ;)

Here’s our ideal 7-day itinerary on Isla Mujeres. We’ve spent holidays with family and gone on girls trips here, and it is truly * chefs kiss *.

Day 1: Arrival and Sunset at Punta Sur's Cliffs

While many head to Playa Norte, consider starting your journey at Punta Sur. This less-crowded area boasts breathtaking cliffs offering panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. Explore the sculpture garden and enjoy the serene ambiance as you witness the sunset. It's a tranquil way to kick off your week-long adventure.

Day 2: Visit Isla Contoy's Lesser-Known Spots

While Isla Contoy is a popular day trip destination, explore its lesser-known spots. Join a sailing tour that includes snorkeling in pristine waters and exploring the untouched beauty of Isla Contoy. Marvel at the diverse bird species that call the island home and enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach. Return to Isla Mujeres in the evening, rejuvenated from a day in nature. Opt for an ecotourism company to guide you.

Day 3: Exploring the Hidden Cave at Hacienda Mundaca

Venture inland to Hacienda Mundaca, an often-overlooked historical site. Discover the mysterious tale of Fermin Mundaca, a 19th-century pirate, and explore the hidden cave on the property. The lush gardens and intriguing history offer a different perspective on the island's past.

Day 4: Kayaking through the Mangroves

Escape the traditional tourist routes and spend a day kayaking through the island's mangroves. Several operators offer guided tours, allowing you to paddle through the winding waterways, spot local wildlife, and appreciate the unique ecosystem. It's a peaceful and immersive way to connect with nature.

Day 5: Snorkeling at the Manchones Reef

Escape the crowds and head to the Manchones Reef for a unique snorkeling experience. This less-visited spot is part of the National Marine Park and boasts vibrant coral formations and diverse marine life. Arrange a snorkeling tour with a local operator to explore this underwater wonderland away from the more frequented areas. If you’re really into snorkeling, you should still check out the popular MUSA, with 500 life-sized underwater statues. Be warned if you get seasick, this may getcha!

Day 6: Art Walk in Colonia La Gloria

Colonia La Gloria, a residential neighborhood, is an emerging hub for street art and local creativity. Take a self-guided art walk through the streets to discover colorful murals, sculptures, and artistic expressions that capture the spirit of the community. Engage with local artists and support their work by purchasing unique pieces.

Day 7: Sunset Picnic at Punta Sur's Hidden Beach

End your week with a tranquil sunset picnic at a hidden beach near Punta Sur. Away from the bustling crowds, this serene spot offers a peaceful setting to reflect on your Isla Mujeres adventure. Pack a picnic basket with local treats, unwind on the secluded sands, and savor the beauty of a quieter side of the island.
